All the cards in the Tarot deck are powerful agents of enlightenment.
Art has a magic all of its own and it often speaks directly to our soul.
In the Rider Waite style of deck, the Major Arcana cards stand out as powerful oracles of big changes in our lives.
Any card that rubs up against your unresolved issue will immediately stand out. However, I think a case can be made that some cards bring bigger changes to our lives than others.
#0 – The Fool is One of the Most Powerful Tarot Cards
The Fool card is one of the most powerful cards in the Rider Waite deck because he is a troubadour. Related decks similarly depict a person who is carefree and on a journey. In medieval society, a troubadour was the one guy in the whole system who had the freedom to go where he pleased.
The traditional emblematic images of the fool show a young man walking unknowingly toward a dangerous precipice obviously on a journey. The fool holds a small bundle hung on a stick across his back and has a small dog for company. The earliest tarot decks show him with a white rose.
This is interesting because, in 14th century England, the War of the Roses took place. This war was between the Duke of York and the Lancaster family. The Duke’s family emblem was the white rose, and the Lancaster family had a similar image, it was the red rose, giving the War of the Roses its name. It may be a reference in the art to the time period when the historic first Tarot decks were created.
As you may know, troubadours during this time were free to travel from castle to castle. Very few others in society were allowed such freedom. The happy-go-lucky entertainers could sing for their supper, entertain a crowd, or pass on a bit of gossip. They were often paid messengers from one landowner to the next who could pass on messages accurately.
Meaning of The Fool Card
In the middle ages, serfs were not allowed to leave the land, and the lords were beholden to the King. Because of their influence and control, people often think of the King as being more powerful, so people are drawn to court cards like the King of Wands, the brave and just ruler, or the King of Pentacles, a steadfast and hardy leader.
Although these court cards hold their own significance, the Fool carries more power than most realize.
Troubadours floated in and out of established power systems and kept going merrily on their way. They were always welcome because they brought news from beyond the garden wall.
The Troubadour is a symbol of the journey that someone who is beginning to study tarot must make. Everyone feels like a fool when starting a new path but this is a journey to be embraced.
The beginner’s mind is the most powerful. Because it comes to the problem with no preconceived ideas. It stands outside of the power system that created the problem and can be an unattached observer.
The Fool brings news from beyond the conscious realm. Like the tarot reader who studies him. The art of the cards makes the connections happen while the story unfolds.
The Fool tarot card or the lowest Trump is powerful because it begins a powerful journey for the person learning the meanings of these cards that are new to them.
#13 – Death is Not the Most Powerful Card in the Tarot Deck.
Okay, I will admit seeing a Death card come up in a tarot reading can be disturbing. The Death tarot card is one of the most misunderstood cards. It is not the most powerful tarot card in the deck but movies would lead you to believe otherwise.
The Rider Waite Tarot and its related deck’s Death card refers to an early Italian image from a historic deck; that shows the figure of Death on a horse standing over a dead King on a battlefield. His wife and child grieve him. A cleric stands to ward Death off, but death is unmoved. The king remains face down on mother Earth. Many other esoteric decks have artistic ways of representing Death, but they are all variations on a theme.
Death Card Meaning
The Death cards are an example of an ending and our powerlessness to negotiate ourselves out of the inevitable. The Death card can seem so ominous as it calls upon our untapped collective knowledge of the inevitable. Some forces are beyond our control. The Death card is about the concept of “the king is dead; long live the king.” Even though people come and go, institutions outlive them.
Hanging on to relationships or situations will not stop the force of Major Arcana Death. No money nor prayers nor pleadings by loved ones with stay Death’s hand when it is your time.
But, let yourself be happy to know that in the end there is an opportunity to start again. This is a card of endings but also new beginnings. Death can be a welcome respite and may bring a message that the battle is about to be over.
Death in the context of the Major arcana is more about the process of churn within the institutions and does not usually refer to a person’s death.
It is a big picture card about a process that is inevitable and is far less ominous as a Major Arcana card than if you had encountered it as a Minor Arcana concept.
Don’t get too caught up in your sense of power. Your roles in life are temporary because no one lives forever and time with loved ones is a precious gift.

#22 The World card is one of the most Powerful Tarot Cards in the Tarot Deck
The World card is a powerful card in the tarot deck and the last of the Major Arcana cards. It is the highest trump in the tarot because it symbolizes the completion of the journey and all the possibilities that open up when one passes on to a new level of competency or awareness. It is also the last card in the Major arcana suit. where the fool’s journey ends.
Historic decks show a classical deity beginning a whole new journey by passing through a green gateway and looking forward to the future.
When you draw the world card, anything is possible. You have achieved complete mastery over one area of your life and can take those skills and apply them to anything else you wish to accomplish.
